Child Growth and Development

Child's height being measured by a parent.

As children navigate various developmental milestones and stages, they acquire new skills, refine their abilities, and construct a unique understanding of the world around them. Learning about how kids grow and change can help parents and guardians navigate and support their families throughout each stage of development.

Supporting Your Child's Development

Every child grows and learns in their own unique way, so it's normal for kids to develop at different rates. It's natural to have questions about how you can help your child as they grow. You might be curious about ways to support their progress and make sure they're getting what they need to thrive. Parenting involves understanding that each child has their own pace of development, and finding ways to provide the right kind of encouragement and guidance can play a big role in helping them reach their potential.

The first few years of a child’s life lays the foundation for their future. Parents and caregivers are a child’s first and most important teachers.

A child’s brain grows rapidly in the first 5 years of their life – making new connections every day necessary for healthy development.

Loving interactions between you, your child, and other people provide stimulation and nourishment for the billions of brain cells to flourish during this sensitive stage of life. Without this stimulation and attachment, brain cells wither and become less responsive.

Everyday activities such as feeding, diaper changing, bath time and going for a walk are great opportunities to incorporate talking, singing, playing, rhyming and peek-a boo games.

Babies do best when their parents and caregivers:

  • Respond to their needs with loving attention.
  • Provide safe spaces to move, explore and play, both indoors and outdoors.
  • Provide different and new experiences.
  • Create an environment that is rich in language.
  • Read, sing, dance and play with them!

If your child is 18-months old it’s time to make an important medical appointment to check on your child’s progress.

The Enhanced 18 Month Well Baby Visit is a detailed medical appointment with a health care provider. At this visit, your child will get their recommended vaccines and you can talk about their health and wellbeing.

Your health care provider will look at your child’s development. If there are concerns, it can lead to specialized support referrals if needed.

Go to the 18-Month Well-Baby Visit Planner to help prepare for the checkup. The website lists five areas of healthy child development to talk about with a health care provider.
