School-aged Children and Teens

Healthy kids learn better. Education helps children grow into healthy adults. A healthy school is a place that supports the physical, mental, social and spiritual health of the whole school community. This works best when administrators, teachers, support staff, students, family, and community partners work together to improve health for all.

Lakelands Public Health's School Health Team is here to support healthy school communities to be healthy schools in Peterborough, Haliburton County, Northumberland and the City of Kawartha Lakes. Our team of public health nurses and health promoters uses a comprehensive healthy schools approach to help address the needs of children, youth and families. This approach is outlined in the Foundations for a Healthy School Framework and is known worldwide as the "Health Promoting Schools Approach".

Together, let's make schools a healthy place for students to learn, grow, and reach their full potential.

Child Hearing and Vision

Lakelands Public Health can enjoy life fully when they have good hearing and vision. Getting help early for concerns with hearing and vision is key to a child's success.

Child Speech and Language

By the time most children are four years old, they can communicate well with others. Helping your child develop speech and language skills is important. These skills make it easier to make friends, learn to read, and do well in school and life.

Dental Health in Schools

Lakelands Public Health's Dental Hygienists and Dental Assistants visit elementary schools every year to give free oral health screenings to students in kindergarten and grade two. At some schools, we may also screen students in other grades.

Immunization and Vaccines

Make sure your child has all the required vaccines needed to attend school. In Ontario, the law called the Immunization of School Pupils Act (ISPA) says that all students must be fully vaccinated to attend school. Parents are responsible for making sure their child’s immunization record is up-to-date with Lakelands Public Health.
