Food Insecurity

Across our communities many people do not have enough money for food, rent, and other basics of living.  This page shares facts and visuals that show how better income can help fix household food insecurity.

The Cost of Eating Well

These infographics show the tough choices families have to make when money for food is tight. Our dashboard shows eleven types of families. In many cases, living costs are much more than what a family earns.

What is Household Food Insecurity?

In the Lakelands region, between 2022-2024, about 22% of households were food insecure (Public Health Ontario, 2025).  Families are food insecure when they do not have enough money to buy the food they need to be healthy.

Food insecurity is a serious problem in our communities.  We need income-based solutions to reduce food insecurity.

What can you do to make a difference?

Make life more affordable for people and families with low-income.

  • Affordable homes
  • Transit
  • Recreation programs
  • Subsidized childcare

Some businesses give employees benefits, a living wage and safe working conditions.  Talk to local businesses.  Choose to buy their products and services.

Everyone has their own story. Don’t make judgements about people living in poverty. Respect all peoples no matter their skin color or other differences.

Household Food Insecurity is a Serious Issue

Household food insecurity puts kids and adults at risk for a wide range of health problems.
People who are food insecure may be more likely to have:

  • Diabetes
  • Heart disease
  • High blood pressure
  • Chronic pain
  • Asthma
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Suicidal thoughts

It can be hard to manage existing health problems when a person is food insecure.
Food insecurity puts extra pressure on the healthcare system. People who struggle to afford food tend to need hospital care more often and stay there longer.

What does it take to reduce food insecurity?  We need polices that improve people’s income.
