Home Safety
Home safety is of utmost importance for everyone. Not only does it protect the health of your family, but it also provides peace of mind for those living in the home. It’s important to keep dangerous items out of reach of young children. Store sharp objects and power tools, chemicals, and medications in a secure location, and teach children about the dangers of these items.
Indoor Air Quality
Most people are aware that outdoor air pollution can damage our health, but fewer realize that indoor air pollution can be as, or even more harmful. Poor indoor air quality can be caused by carbon monoxide (CO), high levels of carbon dioxide (CO2), some types of bacteria, mould, or dust.
Radon
Radon is an invisible, colourless, odourless gas. It occurs naturally when uranium breaks down in soil and rock. When radon is released from the ground into outside air, it’s diluted and not a concern. But in enclosed spaces like homes, radon can reach high levels that pose a health risk to people.
Water Testing and Safety
Water is essential to life, but it can also contain potentially hazardous contaminants that can have a negative impact on our health. Regular water testing is essential to ensure that water sources are safe for drinking, swimming, and other activities.
Pest Control
Pests can be found in both rural and urban communities. Home or property owners who think they are dealing with an infestation should contact a pest control professional.
Septic Systems
The HKPR District Health Unit no longer provides services related to onsite sewage systems (septic systems). Please contact your local municipality for services including permits and inspections.
Mould
Moulds are a fungus that grows on food or materials in homes or other buildings, and can release spores and various chemicals into the air when they grow. When left to grow indoors, some people may experience allergic reactions or and asthma attacks.
