School-based Immunization Program

The school-based immunization program consists of three publicly funded vaccines provided to students in Grade 7 at school. The program is delivered by public health nurses in Ontario at no cost.

The three vaccines are:

Meningitis ACYW135

Vaccine Brand Name: Nimenrix® or Menactra®

Doses Given: One

This vaccine is required for school attendance.

Please note: this vaccine is different from the Meningitis C vaccine that children routinely receive as babies.

Hepatitis B

Vaccine Brand Name: Recombivax HB® or Engerix B®

Doses Given: Two, given 6 months apart

This vaccine is highly recommended, but not required for school attendance.

Please note: If the second dose is given after a child turns 16 years old, then a third dose is needed.

Human Papillomavirus (HPV)

Vaccine Brand Name: Gardasil9 ®

Doses Given: Two, given 6 months apart

This vaccine is highly recommended, but not required for school attendance.

Please note: If the first dose is given after the child turns 15 years old, then three doses are needed.

*The Immunization of School Pupils Act (ISPA) requires all students to receive the Meningococcal (Men-C-ACYW) vaccine or have a valid exemption on file with Lakelands Public Health.

Consent Packages

In early September, consent forms and fact sheets are sent home with Grade 7 students. When we arrive at the school, we will only immunize students whose parent's have returned a completed consent form and signed “YES”.

We will also immunize any Grade 8 students who submitted a consent form the previous year, but did not finish their immunization series.

Tips for Immunization Day

eat a good breakfast
bring a lunch
wear a short-sleeved shirt
bring a distraction: music, a book or a game
know that the needle may feel like a pinch in the upper arm and should only last for a few seconds

Other Options for Immunization

While the school setting works well for many students, we recognize that some require additional support and may benefit from a more private clinic space.

Many primary health care providers in the area have been assisting with school-based vaccine or can offer these vaccines by appointment. If your child received some of these vaccines with their health care provider, you can confirm and/or update your child’s immunization record with Lakelands Public Health.

These vaccines are also available by appointment through Lakelands Public Health for those who do not have access to a primary care provider.
