Public Health Rounds 2026

Updates for Health Professionals in Lakelands Public Health Region

We are pleased to offer health professionals the opportunity to participate in our Certified Public Health Rounds, led by Dr. Thomas Piggott. These sessions provide timely public health updates, expert insights, and practical knowledge to support professional development and strengthen healthcare collaboration across the Lakelands region. Certified by the College of Family Physicians of Canada and the Ontario Chapter. Eligible participants will receive up to 2 Mainpro+ credits.

Immunization Information

Immunization

Influenza, COVID-19, and RSV vaccines have arrived. All three vaccinations can be co-administered to increase uptake.

The Publicly Funded Immunization Schedule for Ontario determines which vaccines can be offered free of charge in Ontario. It contains the following information:

Prenatal and Postpartum Referrals and Resources

Lakelands Public Health offers a variety of FREE services to pregnant individuals and families with young children that can assist new parents and promote a healthy start for babies and children. Review our programs, referral forms, and resources included below.

Support families at a key stage with our 18-Month Well-Baby Visit Package. 

Each package includes a children’s book to foster meaningful caregiver-child connection through shared reading and support early language development. It also includes a simple one-pager with practical strategies to build resilience, strengthen caregiver-child relationships, and connect families to community supports.  

To order this package, please email healthyfamilies@lakelandsph.ca, and include the following information: 

  • How many packages you would like

  • Which office you would like to pick them up from (Peterborough, Port Hope or Lindsay).  

  • Once they are ready for pick-up, you will be notified.  

The Feeding and Nutrition Clinic, is only available in our Port Hope Office, it helps parents develop skills to feed their baby, child, or themselves. One-on-one appointments can also support parents to make food choices that are best for their family. Our Public Health Nurses or Registered Dietitians can give support in person, online, or over the phone. 

Peterborough Child and Family Centres holds drop in breastfeeding clinics on Tuesdays and Thursdays 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. breastfeeding classes no referral needed.

City of Kawartha Lakes 

The City of Kawartha Lakes Prenatal Support Program is a team of Public Health Nurses, Family Home Visitors and a Registered Dietitian who are available to provide prenatal supports, including:

  • One on one nursing phone consultations
  • Prenatal infant feeding consultations
  • Prenatal nutrition education
  • Education related to the birth and labour process
  • Preparation to parent, and parenting resources
  • Access to a free online prenatal education
  • Referrals to community programs
  • Home visiting supports to eligible families

  • Live in the City of Kawartha Lakes
  • Are pregnant

The Healthy Babies Healthy Children (HBHC) Program is a free, confidential and voluntary program for pregnant women and families with children up to age six. The program provides you with advice and support at various stages to help you give your children the best start in life.

The Infant and Child Development Program (ICDP) is a free home visiting service. Through the program we partner with families to support the growth and development of children, including those with developmental disabilities or at risk of developmental delay. The Nurse Family Partnership® (NFP®) Program is a free home visiting program where public health nurses visit young, first-time parents during their pregnancy and the first two years of their child’s life. NFP® can help parents: have a healthy pregnancy, have healthy children, and meet school and/or work goals.

The Pediatric Nutrition Guidelines (Birth to Six Years) for Health Professionals outline evidence-based nutrition and feeding guidelines along with red flags for healthy, full-term infants and children up to 6 years of age.

The guidelines were developed by members of the Ontario Dietitians in Public Health (ODPH). The document is posted at Pediatric Nutrition Guidelines for Health Professionals, January 2025 - Ontario Dietitians in Public Health.

Designated Officers

The Designated Officer Program helps to support emergency service workers (firefighters, police, paramedics) take the appropriate steps of action when they may have been exposed to a communicable disease in the line of duty. The program also ensures that all agencies of emergency services have an identified Designated Officer who is available to their staff 24/7 to respond and investigate all reported exposures to communicable diseases. The Designated Officer acts as the liaison between the emergency services workers and Lakelands Public Health.

Diseases of Public Health Significance

These diseases are to be reported to the Medical Officer of Health according to the specified timelines, even if diagnosis is only suspect (as per Ontario Regs 559/91 and amendments under the Health Protection and Promotion Act). During business hours (M-F 8:30-4:30), DoPHS must be reported immediately.

Animal bites or scratches must also be reported immediately to public health (as per Ontario Reg 557/90 and amendments under the Health Protection and Promotion Act.
