Designated Officers

The Designated Officer Program helps to support emergency service workers (firefighters, police, paramedics) take the appropriate steps of action when they may have been exposed to a communicable disease in the line of duty. The program also ensures that all agencies of emergency services have an identified Designated Officer who is available to their staff 24/7 to respond and investigate all reported exposures to communicable diseases. The Designated Officer acts as the liaison between the emergency services workers and Lakelands Public Health.

Prenatal, Postpartum Referrals and Resources

Lakelands Public Health offers a variety of FREE services to pregnant individuals and families with young children.

Support families at a key stage with our 18-Month Well Baby Visit Package. 

Each package includes a children’s book to foster meaningful caregiver-child connection through shared reading and support early language development. It also includes a simple one-pager with practical strategies to build resilience, strengthen caregiver-child relationships, and connect families to community supports.  

To order this package, please fill out our order form. 

The Feeding and Nutrition Clinic, is only available in our Port Hope Office, it helps parents develop skills to feed their baby, child, or themselves. One-on-one appointments can also support parents to make food choices that are best for their family. Our Public Health Nurses or Registered Dietitians can give support in person, online, or over the phone. 

Peterborough Child and Family Centres holds drop in breastfeeding clinics on Tuesdays and Thursdays 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. breastfeeding classes no referral needed.

City of Kawartha Lakes 

The City of Kawartha Lakes Prenatal Support Program is a team of Public Health Nurses, Family Home Visitors and a Registered Dietitian who are available to provide prenatal supports, including:

  • One on one nursing phone consultations
  • Prenatal infant feeding consultations
  • Prenatal nutrition education
  • Education related to the birth and labour process
  • Preparation to parent, and parenting resources
  • Access to a free online prenatal education
  • Referrals to community programs
  • Home visiting supports to eligible families

  • Live in the City of Kawartha Lakes
  • Are pregnant

The Healthy Babies Healthy Children (HBHC) Program is a free, confidential and voluntary program for pregnant women and families with children up to age six. The program provides you with advice and support at various stages to help you give your children the best start in life.

The Infant and Child Development Program (ICDP) is a free home visiting service. Through the program we partner with families to support the growth and development of children, including those with developmental disabilities or at risk of developmental delay. The Nurse Family Partnership® (NFP®) Program is a free home visiting program where public health nurses visit young, first-time parents during their pregnancy and the first two years of their child’s life. NFP® can help parents: have a healthy pregnancy, have healthy children, and meet school and/or work goals.

The Pediatric Nutrition Guidelines (Birth to Six Years) for Health Professionals outline evidence-based nutrition and feeding guidelines along with red flags for healthy, full-term infants and children up to 6 years of age.

It’s flexible, fun, and totally on your schedule! You can go through the topics in order, or jump around and pick what information you need. Your access does not expire.

The Publicly Funded Immunization Schedule for Ontario determines which vaccines can be offered free of charge in Ontario. It contains the following information:

  • Routine immunization schedule
  • Catch-up immunization schedule
  • High risk criteria & schedule
  • Intervals between doses, both recommended & minimums 

Immunization Program Updates

Meningococcal Update August 2026

Ontario is replacing the Men-C-C dose given at 12 months of age with Men-C-ACYW135. The first dose of Men-C-ACYW135 is offered to children beginning at 12 months of age, and the second dose is offered to adolescents through the Grade 7 school-based immunization program. 
Children who already received Men-C-C at 12 months of age are not eligible for a catch-up program. Use up your remaining unexpired Men-C-C vaccine supply. The online vaccine portal and vaccine order form has been updated.

Pneumococcal Conjugate Vaccines

Starting August 17, 2026, Ontario's publicly funded pneumococcal vaccine program for adults age 65 years of age and older will transition to the pneumococcal 21-valent conjugate vaccine (Pneu-C-21, Capvaxive). The Pneu-C-21 vaccine provides broader protection against invasive pneuomococcal disease (IPD) compared to the Pneu-C-20 vaccine. 

Remaining Doses of Unexpired Pneu-C-20 (Prevnar 20) Vaccine: You may use unexpired Prevnar 20 for individuals aged 6 weeks to 64 years, who are at high risk of IPD.

If your vaccine fridge has experienced an Adverse Storage Condition (ASC)/Cold Chain Incident: 

  1. Report the ASC/Cold Chain to Public Health by fax (905-885-5352). Please include vaccine fridge temperature logs from the last 4 weeks including the ASC temperatures. 

  1. Place all affected vaccine in a bag or container marked “DO NOT USE” and leave in the fridge. Do not discard the vaccines. 

  1. A nurse will contact you with further instructions.  

Please note, some investigations take a few days, and in rare cases, like city wide power outages impacting multiple sites, over a week to complete. During this time any vaccine appointments must be rescheduled until the viability of the vaccine can be identified.

Suspected and confirmed cases of Diseases of Public Health Significance (DoPHS), as well as animal bites and scratches, must be reported to public health immediately during business hours (Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.).
