Assignment:
Lakelands Public Health will employ four (4) post-secondary school students for the Safe Water and Vector-Borne Disease Prevention Programs. To be clear, these positions will involve working in both the Safe Water and Vector-Borne Disease Prevention Program areas, not one or the other.
Duties will include:
- Interpretation of laboratory results for drinking water and recreational water samples.
- Sampling of rural and municipal recreational water with an emphasis on public beaches.
- Posting beaches when adverse bacteriological results are obtained.
- Update disclosure website with beach water surveillance results.
- Response to private, adverse drinking water results.
- Answering telephone calls related to safe water and vector-borne disease prevention.
- Developing and implementing communications strategies with the support of the Communications and Environmental Health Managers.
- Investigating standing water complaints.
- Monitoring stormwater management ponds for mosquito breeding.
- Setting up mosquito traps and submitting contents for testing.
- Assisting with tick collection surveillance.
- Maintaining records and completing summary reports.
- Public communication and education through written and verbal means.
Qualifications:
- Enrollment in, or completion of, a relevant university undergraduate degree; preference will be given to those enrolled in 1st, 2nd or 3rd year of a Certified Environmental Health Program accredited by the Canadian Institute of Public Health Inspectors.
- The candidate must possess and demonstrate excellent written and oral communication skills and the ability to coordinate daily activities effectively.
- Evidence of vehicle insurance, including business-use insurance.
- Must possess a valid driver's license and have access to ongoing reliable, efficient and effective transportation throughout the work day to meet the position’s needs.
- Maintain up-to-date immunization according to the Ontario Publicly-Funded Immunization Schedule and/or the most recent edition of the Canadian Immunization Guide and the National Advisory Committee
- Immunization as per Lakelands Public Health policy, including being fully vaccinated with a COVID-19 vaccine series; and
- TB skin testing is required at the onset of employment and may be required as part of routine TB surveillance or follow-up of potential exposures.
- Canadian Institute of Public Health Inspectors Student Membership (preferred).
- Current and satisfactory Criminal Records Check and Vulnerable Sector Search.
- Students must be able to swim.
Note: This opportunity does not qualify as field training for the purpose of meeting the practicum requirements of the Board of Certification of the Canadian Institute of Public Health Inspectors.
