Summary of Duties:

The Public Health Inspector is responsible for monitoring, promoting, and ensuring compliance with the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care’s Ontario Public Health Standards (2018), under the Health Protection and Promotion Act, related to Foundational Standards, Food Safety, Safe Water, Rabies Prevention and Control, Healthy Environments and Infectious Diseases Prevention and Control and any other programs administered by the Board of Health.

Minimum Qualifications and Position Requirements:

  • Successful completion of a University Degree in Environmental Health or equivalent.
  • Current Certificate in Public Health Inspection (Canada) [C.P.H.I.(C)].  
  • (If certification as a Public Health Inspector was obtained after January 1, 2017, mandatory membership is required by the Canadian Institute of Public Health Inspectors.)
  • Minimum one (1) year of full-time ongoing experience in the enforcement of legislation.
  • Demonstrated ongoing effective ability to perform the following: 
  • Work productively and effectively without the need for close supervision;
  • Conduct quality inspections;
  • Use of excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills;
  • Apply initiative, tact, diplomacy, and judgment in work related and engagements that impact the workplace;
  • Interpret and apply relevant legislation, research, and other relevant information;
  • Work well and collaboratively with others;
  • Adapt to new, different, and/or changing requirements;
  • Organize and re-organize workload as priorities and demands change; and
  • Apply computer literacy using inspection databases (e.g., Healthspace), Microsoft Office applications, internet, and email at an intermediate level.
  • Must possess a valid Class G driver’s licence and ongoing access to reliable, efficient and effective transportation throughout the work day as travel to multiple sites in a single day is required to areas inaccessible by public transportation.
  • Maintain up-to-date immunization according to the Ontario Publicly-Funded Immunization Schedule and/or the most recent edition of the Canadian Immunization Guide and the National Advisory Committee on Immunization as per the Peterborough Public Health policy, including being fully vaccinated with a COVID-19 vaccine series.
  • TB skin testing is required at the onset of employment and may be required as part of routine TB surveillance or follow-up of potential exposures.
