Assignment:
The Practicum Student will work under the guidance of Certified Public Health Inspectors to carry out activities required by the Ontario Public Health Standards related to Food Safety, Safe Water, Rabies Prevention and Control, Health Hazard Prevention and Management and Infectious Diseases Prevention and Control. This opportunity qualifies as field training for the purpose of meeting the practicum requirements of the Board of Certification of the Canadian Institute of Public Health Inspectors.
Duties will include:
- Conduct collaborative and independent inspections of various fixed facilities including food premises, recreational water facilities, and personal service settings.
- Conduct collaborative and independent investigations of potential rabies exposures.
- Conduct collaborative and independent investigations related to potential health hazards.
- Attend and participate in various meetings, outreach activities, and other opportunities to meet the requirements of the Canadian Institute of Public Health Inspectors Board of Certification.
- Maintaining records and completing detailed inspection and summary reports.
- Public communication and education through written and verbal means.
- Participate in Single Line In (call centre) rotation.
- Promptly and accurately record information related to inspections, investigations and service requests in Hedgehog inspection database.
Qualifications:
- Enrolled in/or completed a Bachelor of Applied Science (Environmental Health) Program.
- Must possess and demonstrate competent written and oral communication skills and have the ability to co-ordinate daily activities effectively.
- Must possess and demonstrate excellent interpersonal and conflict resolution skills.
- Demonstrated knowledge of applicable legislation.
- Self-motivated and able to complete assigned duties independently and as part of a team, as required.
- Ability to wear personal protective equipment (PPE), as required and as appropriate.
- Shows discretion and appropriately handles confidential information.
- Must possess a valid driver's license, and have access to ongoing reliable, efficient and effective transportation throughout the work day to meet the position’s needs.
- Maintain up-to-date immunization according to the Ontario Publicly-Funded Immunization Schedule and/or the most recent edition of the Canadian Immunization Guide and the National Advisory Committee on Immunization as per the Peterborough Public Health/Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge District Health Unit policy, including being fully vaccinated with a COVID-19 vaccine series; and:
- TB skin testing is required at the onset of employment and may be required as part of routine TB surveillance or follow-up of potential exposures.
- Student Member of the Canadian Institute of Public Health Inspectors.
- Current and satisfactory Criminal Records Check and Vulnerable Sector Search.
