The Board of Health oversees Lakelands Public Health (formerly the HKPR District Health Unit and Peterborough Public Health) to ensure that staff deliver programs and services in accordance with the Ontario Public Health Standards, which are set by the Ontario Ministry of Health.

The Medical Officer of Health, acting on behalf of the Board of Health, administers public health programs and services in alignment with the Health Unit's mission, vision and values.

In accordance with the Health Protection and Promotion Act, the Board of Health for Lakelands Public Health's membership of the new Board of Health will include 9 municipal representatives (two from the County of Northumberland, two from the City of Kawartha Lakes, one from the County of Haliburton, two from the County of Peterborough, and two from the City of Peterborough).

In addition, the new Board of Health intends to have section 50 representation as currently exists (one member from Curve Lake First Nation and one from Hiawatha First Nation).

The new Board of Health will also include provincial appointees, as outlined in the Health Protection and Promotion Act, and these members are yet to be confirmed.

Interested members of the public can apply to be considered for a provincial appointment to the Board of Health. To be considered you must:

  • reside within the catchment area of the HKNPHU (Cities of Peterborough, Kawartha Lakes; Counties of Haliburton, Northumberland, Peterborough; Curve Lake, Hiawatha and Alderville First Nations.
  • be at least 18-years old; and,
  • not be a current employee of the HKNPHU; and,
  • apply for and be appointed through the Public Appointments Secretariat.

    Board of Health Meeting 9:00 AM - 11:30 AM

    The Haliburton Kawartha Northumberland Peterborough Health Unit (formerly the HKPR District Health Unit and Peterborough Public Health) would like to advise media, and the community of an upcoming Board of Health meeting scheduled for Thursday, September 11, at 9 a.m.

    The Board of Health meeting will be held in-person, at the Port Hope office location at 200 Rose Glen Road. 

    During this time, both the HKPR District Health Unit and Peterborough Public Health remain committed to engaging with the communities they serve, partners and teams to determine future opportunities to continue the legacy of public healthcare across the City of Kawartha Lakes, Haliburton County, Northumberland County and the Greater Peterborough Area.

That the Board of Health for the Haliburton Kawartha Northumberland Peterborough Health Unit appoint Dr. Thomas Piggott as Acting Medical Officer of Health and Chief Executive Officer, effective immediately, subject to a signed employment agreement and Minister of Health final approval for Medical Officer of Health appointment.
